Sophia Mathur was born in April 2007 in Sudbury, Ontario. Sophia’s environmental lobbying to politicians began at age 7 and has taken her all the way to the US Congress and the Canadian Parliament with the organization Citizens’ Climate Lobby. She embraced Greta Thunberg’s call for youth climate action in November 2018 and was the first youth outside Europe to do Fridays for Future strikes starting on November 2, 2018. Sophia was proud to win the 2019 Canadian National Museum of Nature Youth Inspiration Award, and to be recognized as Starfish Canada’s Top 25 Environmentalists under the age of 25 in 2020. With Ecojustice, Sophia is one of seven young people taking the Ford Government to court for weakening Ontario’s 2030 climate target. Sophia is one of eleven Canadian environmental activists whose story was told by author Jamie Bastedo in his 2020 book, “Protectors of the Planet: Environmental Trailblazers for 7 to 97”. She was trained by Climate Reality and Al Gore in the summer of 2020 and recorded over 100 Acts of Leadership. Sophia was selected as one of the Future Famous by Raine Maida of the Canadian rock band Our Lady Peace and Sophia was highlighted in Our Lady Peace’s July 2021 rock video Stop Making Stupid People Famous. Sophia most recently the recipient of the 2021 Action For Nature International Award for Climate Activists ages 8-14.

Sophia co-starred in the documentary CitizenKid: Earth Comes First produced by White Pine Pictures that aired nationally in Canada on World Environment Day June 5th, 2020 on YTV. She was one of several climate activists from around the world featured on the 60th Anniversary episode of The Nature of Things titled “Rebellion” that aired on CBC TV/CBC Gem on November 6, 2020. She also had a speaking cameo in the movie I am Greta Sophia was one eight of Canadian activists featured in the documentary “The Fight For Tomorrow” on CityTV, March 30, 2021. Sophia is one of six global climate activists featured in Cop 26 in Your Hands, which will premiere on October 18, 2021 on Sky Kids and streaming service NOW
